Hello all,
Life has been busy, as usual! Just thought I would let you know how I am doing.
I have been mostly working on general fitness at this point. I bought some new shoes last week (as did my friends Marissa and Ryan), which can't hurt! The shoes I had before this were probably 4 years old. The longest run I have gone on so far was with my roommate Vinnie. We probably ran about 6 miles (maybe longer). We did walk a little but I am pretty proud of us, anyway. All of the roommates (there are 4 of us) have been running more. We seem to have all caught the running bug. It is nice because I always have someone to run with, but sometimes I like to run on my own so I can go my own pace and clear my head. I won't always be able to run with my roommates, because I know they won't be too excited about running 10 and 20 miles. I especially like that I can run later at night and feel safer than I would alone. I realize that Ames is pretty safe, but after living in Central America and on campuses for the past several years, I have become a lot less trusting. I would run late at night in Marion ("home") and feel safe, but not necessarily here.
I have been running about 5 days a week. I try not to go 2 days in a row without running. Today I took the Memorial Day holiday to get some errands done. As far as TNT stuff I did today, I bought a swimming suit for cross-training in, I did sit-ups, hand weights, and jumped rope while I watched a movie... that's 2 hrs of light cardio-- not too bad-- and I bought some ingredients for goodies I am going to sell in the break room at work. I made muffins on Friday to sell this week.
I have also been working on building up my email and address list so I can contact as many people as possible. So far, I have received 1 donation from my house mother, Mom T. Mom T lives in my sorority house and makes sure that everything is running smoothly. I don't live there anymore, but I had a great time with her when I did. Thanks, Mom T!
Anyway, things are looking up. I am running farther and coming up with fundraising schemes all the time. I am hoping to hook up with the 3 other girls doing TNT out of Ames; not just to run with, but also for fundraising purposes.
I've got to go now, I need to eat something before I go for my evening run.
Happy Memorial Day!

Eulogy
Mom
Born near Galena of limestone and mines,
West 'cross the river, you left Illinois.
Raised near Lamont, a Hawkeye defined,
Fell deeply in love with a Masonville boy.
Four kids, a store, your faith, and your love,
Your family, your friends, your life, your embrace,
The life that you lived, gently guided above,
Toward kindness and peace,
With hope and with grace.
Near 80 years on, it's time for your rest,
A time for reflection, a time to regard,
To have known you, a gift, heavenly blessed,
To love you, so easy, to lose you, so hard.
Though we need to weep and grieve for you, Mom,
We celebrate you and your life and your joy.
Cause we know today that you're smiling somewhere,
Hand-in-hand with your God
And the Masonville boy.

Turning a New Leaf
I have just joined a wonderful organization. Basically, I raise money for a good cause (the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), and they send me on a sweet trip.
The catch? I have to compete in a distance event.
I have chosen to run in the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco on October 19th. I really wanted to try the Century Ride (100 miles) or a triathlon, but both require a bike, and I can't afford a nice one right now... so that will be something to look forward to for my next event.
I know it may be hard to believe that I am actually going to do this-- raise $4,300 and run 26.2 miles in SF, potentially the hilliest city in the nation-- but that is exactly what I intend to do.
I will be running not only to honor my late grandmother, Mary Cannon, who we lost to lymphoma in May of 2002, but also to strive for advancements in this field. Who knows, some day the money I raise may be used to help save my life or the life of someone I love.
Please join me.

...and remember, I am always looking for a running buddy!
