THE BIG DAY

I have completed a marathon!

I am very proud to be able to say that! I finished in 5:36:56. My goal was under 6 hours and I realized from the start that I was probably going to be able to beat that. I was running with the 5:30 pace guy for several miles but I kept wavering back and forth, running faster for the most part, but taking more time at the water stops and I finally dropped back a bit when I had to stretch in the Waterworks Park.

Play-by-play of the weekend:
Saturday:
This morning I slept in and ran errands, packed, etc. When Ryan got off work, we headed to Des Moines for the race expo thing. I had to stop by to pick up my race bib, tshirt, and a timing chip. We checked out a bunch of displays and I bought a cheap shirt for $5. We checked into the hotel (crappy, btw), and looked through all the random samples we were given at the expo. I set out all my gear so I would be ready for the next day. Then I went down to the team's spaghetti dinner. It was great to learn how much we earned (between like 15-20 people)... $50,000!!!! It is amazing what we accomplished. $2,000 was really not that hard for me to raise, but it is awesome to realize how fast it adds up when it is compounded like that. We heard several people speak, but the people I was most interested in were the honored patients. It was very touching but also very humbling. $2,000 is really not going to do that much; there is so much to be done. When I got back to the room, Ryan was eating Tasty Tacos, so I had some homemade guacamole and chips, took a long bath to prepare for the race, watched part of the Red Sox game (Ryan fell asleep), and then went to bed.

Race day:
I got up about 6 am and put on all my gear, headed down to breakfast, and then met the team in the lobby. We walked to the starting line and stretched, used the bathroom, etc. and lined up from the fastest to slowest (generally). It was really weird, when they fired the gun, we literally just stood there for over 2 minutes. By the time we crossed the starting line and were able to jog, the announcer stated that we were 2:30 into the race and the leading half-marathoners were already around the half-mile mark. Again, a very humbling experience, but also kind of funny. It's not like I was running to break records or anything. It was just a good excuse to make exercising a priority. We had a timing chip on our shoes anyway, so "our" time didn't start until we crossed the starting line.

Miles 1-13ish:
I was feeling really good and running with my friend Jen. We were having fun, talking, running downtown, listening to bands, taking it easy, meeting people... Unfortunately, right before we got to Drake stadium-- about halfway, she got a migraine. I felt that I was not going to be able to finish if I stopped/slowed down (I was getting really tired and I tend to have asthma attacks/cramps if I stop frequently), so we parted ways. I did see her later at Waterworks Park, though, so I was glad for that! I fell in step with the 5:30 pacer and tried to stay with him for several miles.

All the miles run together now up until Waterworks Park. I'm not sure where we entered the park, but it was only fun running there for about 2-3 miles. Then we left the forested area and went by the water. It was really windy and since the loop was so big, it didn't feel like I was making much progress. The water stops got further and further apart (literally) and that didn't help because I was needing to eat my energy gels and drink Gatorade more often. By this time, I had burned off a ridiculous amount of calories, and was only able to replace them at a rate of about 100 calories every 2-3 miles... so I had a large deficit! I was getting really hungry and dizzy but kept plodding along. At first, I was discouraged by all the people walking in front of me. I was wondering how they got ahead of me when I had been running almost the entire time... but then I realized that the walkers started a full hour earlier than the runners, so that made me feel a lot better.

Miles 22-26.2:
I got to the 22 mile marker and ate a Gu, I was so hungry. I was getting sunburned, but I could tell my face was drained from the lack of food. Seeing the photos that were taken the last few miles of the race, I realize I looked worse than I felt...! I took some extra time at this stop. I was getting really exhausted and began walking when I guess you could say I hit my wall. I was contemplating walking the rest of the way, but thought "the faster I run/walk, the faster I am done." I had an asthma attack and had to use my inhaler a few times. I just crouched down and took some water, walked a while. I started "yogging" again (like in Anchorman) and got to Gray's Lake. It was super windy and I was getting bitter, wondering why the planners didn't have the runners run the opposite way. It was very difficult the last few miles because there was little access for supporters to get to the location, so I really felt I was out there alone. The already sparse water stops were also running out and shutting down, so that was very annoying. I think it would have been easier to finish downtown than out in the boonies like that.

Anyway, I struggled through the last few miles run-walking (mostly running!) and just thinking about Ryan and my teammates waiting for me at the end. We came to the last mile and there were some junior high of JV (young) cheerleaders. The guy in front of me asked if they were out of juice as they seemed pretty out of it. They said they were tired and that thought alone got me through the next half mile or so. How ironic. They did cheer for us though and it was greatly appreciated! I made the last turn at (I'm guessing) the 26 mile mark with 4 blocks to go. I could see the finish line. I am so glad I turned when I did and not 30 seconds later, because I'm pretty sure I would have had to wait for a train (ridiculous... I think they should subtract time from those who had to wait). The Eastern Iowa coach ran with me a little and let me know where I was and that I should have a photo finish. I always try to finish a run at a sprint so I can have no regrets about how the race ended. I was able to sprint (well, at least it felt like a sprint and the crowd got excited) across the finish line, so I was very excited about that. I had my photo taken and had to figure out how to get off the course, which took several minutes because there were ;people everywhere and I was pretty out of it. I was walking so slow. Ryan walked along beside me on the other side of the fence and gave me directions because he somehow figured out what I needed to do.

I checked it at the TNT booth, tried to get a massage and was turned away for coming in so late :( and ate a ton of food that was shoved my way. Ryan collected my things and we got the car, went to his parents' to clean up, and went to Hessen Haus with the team for dinner. Ryan drove home and we were super lazy all day Monday, watching movies, eating junk food, and enjoying a day off to bask in the glow of success...

Thanks for supporting me through all of this. It is crazy to think that when I started training in June, I wasn't running regularly at all and in 3 1/2 months, I trained myself to able to run 26+ consecutive miles. The human body is amazing. Honestly, I wasn't even running 4 days a week most weeks! I haven't run since the marathon, but now that I am done with my DNR job, I will have more time to dedicate. I did do my video, though, so that is something.

I HAVE MET MY FUNDRAISING GoAL!

YAY!!!
I have now raised over $2,080 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!
I have also completed my 20-mile run! My race is coming up this Sunday and I am very excited for the event. Ryan bought me some new shoes and I have stocked up on energy gels, PowerBars, and a disposable camera.
I am really happy I did this, it has kept me going through some difficult times and has given focus and direction to my life the past few months. Ryan accepted a job in Sioux City (northwestern IA), so we will be moving up there in December. I don't know if I will be able to participate in TNT Iowa, but we will be just across the Missouri from Nebraska and South Dakota, so maybe I will be able to participate there. Anyway, TNT has given me the motivation and made me accountable for my own fitness and well-being. I knew that this change had to be made in my life because of ongoing health problems (asthma) and the threat of others to come (diabetes).
After the race, I plan on focusing more on nutrition and possibly vegetarianism... or at least cutting back on meat. This decision has been made for health reasons as well as economic and environmental reasons... and that says nothing about cruelty, though I do believe humans are designed to eat meat and I do not believe that eating meat is inherently wrong or cruel, but that the methods are unnecessarily unnatural... and thus probably unhealthy for consumers as well. If nothing else, my delving (or at least insense dabbling) into the healthy/organic/veggie lifestyle will force me to be a more creative chef.

I like a challenge.

See you on the flip side--- When I write again, I will have completed my marathon!!! Photos will be posted.

Thanks to everyone who donated.... And remember, you can still donate to the cause. Just go to my fundraising website or cut a check to the LLS. It is tax-deductible.

Peace and Love,

-A

my 2nd 18 miler

I got up early on Saturday morning (actually this practice started 1/2 hr later than for the other practices due to the tilt of the earth) and headed down to Clive, as I have done nearly every Saturday in recent memory (since May). I was very nervous to run 20 miles. I know that it is only 2 miles more than I ran a few weeks ago, but for some reason, that seemed more intimidating. Also, I was very sore for about 2 1/2 days last time.
I'm not sure if it was the fact that I had someone to run with, I got up later, it was cooler out, that I paced myself, I ate something different, or what but I amazed myself this weekend with how easy the run was. I didn't end up going the full 20 because I didn't know where to go after 18 (the trail gets really confusing there and last time, I was like incoherent) but I am satisfied with the 18 that I did run. Not only did I run the full 18 miles, shaving over 10 minutes off my time, but I felt pretty good, too. I was sore on Saturday but not nearly as sore or tired as last time. I hope the weather is chilly on race day like it was that day.
I was also surprised by how good I felt because I have had a cold for the past few weeks and have been working 2 jobs. I guess taking some time off from running was a good idea, because I am almost over it already... YAY!
This weekend, Ryan and I will be at the Iowa-Iowa State game in IC... I AM So EXCITED!!! Really I should figure out some way to raise money while I am there, but it could be kind of tough since we have tickets on the 45-yardline... I guess when we are tailgating before/after I can collect donations. I have less than $300 to go, but I am getting discouraged because the money just hasn't been coming in lately like it was at first. It is very difficult to plan things because I am so busy and even when I do, people just don't show up. :(
I'll figure something out...
and I'll keep you posted.

For now, I am off to Ames Raquet and Fitness... I just won a free week's pass. I think it was from a drawing at DQ.
NICE>!

18-miler

Well, I did it! It wasn't easy, but 18 miles wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I have decided that I am in love with energy gels and I just went out and bought a ton of them yesterday. I will not be running over 16 miles without them. They don't really taste that good, but they make me feel so good and give me a jolt of energy. Although, they don't really stave off my hunger... You might be surprised how much you can eat when you are getting that much exercise. I'm not surprised Michael Phelps eats as much as he does, because he burns it all off in just a couple hours.

I am approaching my goal of $2000. I am at about $1600 right now... so please donate! I have been steadily selling food at work and collecting cans for neighbors to recycle (Iowa has a 5 cent deposit on all pop and beer cans and bottles). Anyway, things have been busy with 2 jobs and getting in the long mileage days. Luckily, this weekend's run is only 10 miles. YAY! I hope to be done in about 1:30:00. And the great thing is that I probably won't be sore for 3 days after! Last week, I averaged 11-12 min/mi, but that is skewed because I walked a lot the last couple of miles but started the run with the fast girls. I am going to have to work on pace.

See you after my 10-mile run!

Progress...

... has been slow.

Ryan and I had a great time in MN and WI this past week seeing waterfalls, sleeping in a tent, touring the Leinenkugel's brewery, canoeing, and just enjoying each other and our time off. That being said, we spent way more time in the car than I anticipated! There was so much that we wanted to see! We did walk A LoT and canoed and stuff but I did not hit the trails while we were on vacation (isn't that the definition of vacation, after all?) ...

In other news, I started a new job today at a vet clinic in Ames. It's not what I want to do forever, but it will do for now and at least it is sort of related to what I want to do... wildlife research. It's better than waiting tables, anyway, as my temp job with the DNR comes to a close in october. I will probably go to grad school next fall or get my teaching certificate. I'll just take things as they come.

Before vacation, Adam and I ran the Sac and Fox Trail near Cedar Rapids until we reached a bridge that was washed away by floods. Adam had a "shortcut" that he convinced me to try and our 10 mile run turned into a 13+ mile hike. It took forever because we didn't know where we were and didn't have any water or anything. other than that excitement, I have just been running around Ames and in Clive a few times. I have also been doing my pilates video, which I know sounds lame, but it's actually pretty fun and I do the whole 50 minutes so it is a decent workout.

I have decided to participate in the IMT marathon in Des Moines on 10/19/08. My new fund raising minimum is $2000, but I am shooting for $2750. The donations have been slowing down, but they are still coming in, so that is exciting. I plan to walk the tailgating crowd at the ISU games, which will be starting up soon. I really didn't know what to expect because I have never tried to raise this much money. I am happy with how much I have raised so far-- almost $1300 now, and I still have over 2 months to go!

Next Sunday at 1pm I will be hosting an event at the Prairie Moon Winery in Ames. There will be a live band, wine tasting, a picnic lunch, and a raffle. Tickets are $10. Let me know if you would like further information... It should be a fun time with cool people.

Tomorrow's plan: 18 miles on the Clive Greenbelt.
I'm not going to lie...
I am a little scared.
A full 5 miles further than I have ever run.
And yet that is still 8.22 miles short of my goal.

This week...

... has been rough. I have not been running as much as I should. Crazy storms, weird hours at work, and SHIN SPLINTS are the root. It has also been hard because I have been running alone :( I have some people that want to run with me but the schedules never seem to jive, or if they do, it is like 100 degrees or tornado weather. Boo to that.
I have been doing my workout video pretty regularly, and have some schemes in mind to raise money. This weekend I ran/walked 13 mi. It was pretty horrendous because of the shin splints. It took me about 3 hrs. This weekend, we are to run 10, so that should be okay. I will be in Marion for a class reunion so I think I will try out my old haunts. I would love to do the Sac and Fox, but Mom says it is partially closed due to flood damage. Sad.
Next weekend, Ryan and I will be going to Duluth, MN for a wedding. We plan on spending a few days up there camping. Hopefully we can stay with friends in the Twin Cities on the way up so we won't have to drive so far on the way up or back. I know it will be a challenge to get my mileage in these days too, but since we will be on the lake and it will be a teensy bit cooler, and of course I won't have to work, I plan on really getting my mileage back up. I hope my legs are feeling better by then! Wish me luck!

The long and short of it

It has been quite a while since I last blogged!

In the meantime, I have been in Davenport for a bachelorette party, in Cedar Rapids for Independence Day and to survey the extensive flood damage :( ... I have been to Lincoln, NE for a wedding, and drove to Deerwood, MN, sat on top of Iowa's state capitol, and have driven all around Iowa for work. I have been able to get my workouts in here and there, not always in the form of running, but in the form of swimming at Iowa State, jumping on a trampoline with my nephews, and last night, walking all over Ames soliciting donations from RAGBRAI riders. I made almost $100 just from that and also got the word out about Team In Training.

I have not been receiving as many checks lately, so I will probably be sending out reminder postcards soon. Recommitment is coming up soon, which means I will be locked in to the fund raising goal because TNT is going to have to start making reservations and booking flights. I don't think I am going to be able to raise all $4,300 I need to participate in San Francisco. :( I have a few more weeks to decide what the next step will be.

The way I see it, the options are simple:
1) Work my tail off and make the $4,300.
2) Work my tail off and make $4,100. This will be enough for me to go to the Rock & Roll San Antonio race and see Pat Benetar. I know the difference is only $200, but it would give me an extra month to spend raising the cash.

3) Work my tail off and raise $2,000 so I can participate in the Des Moines Marathon. I know this is a real, viable option and no matter how much I raise, just training and getting donations is an accomplishment in itself, but... I can run in Des Moines any day of the week. I would like to have the trip be sort of a reward, and Des Moines is just not that exciting to me anymore. I am down there sometimes several times a week for work and practice.
We'll see how things go.
I'll keep you posted.

... oh and I last sent in over $300 in checks that should be credited to my account soon (along with the $144 that Ryan and I raised at the Corn 500 over a month ago). Today I received 2 donations of $100 each... So by my estimation, I am almost to $800 (?) I have continued selling brownies and now M&Ms at work, so that is pretty steady, maybe like $5 per week. But it all adds up! I have some plans in the works, too. I am hoping to incorporate some sort of fundraiser with the football games when they start up.

Well, I should probably go get some miles in today before it gets too dark!
Have a good night!

Website

I just updated the fundraising website with information about our honored teammate, six-year-old Natalie Borgen, from Pleasant Hill, IA.

Check it out!

Donors

Apparently the word is out! I have sent out about 60 letters to potential donors. I have gotten a few sent back (I guess people have moved since I last sent them a piece of mail!) but I have already gotten a few responses from family members, so that is very encouraging. I only sent them out last week!

$25 from Vern and Valda Schaul
$25 from Dave and Elaine Shaw

I have continued to bring in a few bucks per week by selling goodies at work.

Thanks everyone for your support-- and tell your friends!

Background

FYI, in case you were wondering.
I guess you could call this my athletic resume.

Currently: Training for the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco on October 19th.
I am up to 12 miles (in ~2:20), and am cross-training with weights and swimming.
My goal is to finish uninjured. I would like to be done in 6 hrs, but I don't really know what to expect at this point because I have never even ran a 1/2 marathon yet. I think I will be able to run the majority of it and I am training myself physically and mentally in preparation for the big day!

College:
ISU Crew Club, 1 semester
University of Iowa Women's Novice Rowing Team: 1 year (yes, I was a D1 athlete)

H.S.
Cross Country: 2 yrs (I was never the fastest, but I was never the last either!)
Soccer: 3 yrs (my favorite is sweeper, but any defense will do)
Volleyball: 2 yrs (I like to serve best)
Tennis: 2 yrs (terrible!)
Softball: ha- I started playing softball when I was five. I have played every position, but prefer catcher, outfield, and 3B/SS... so basically anything but pitcher or 1B. My first varsity start was in 8th grade at the state tournament. The first sign I got was to bunt and I almost died! We ended up getting 6th for 2A schools. Not bad for a roster of only 11 girls. :) Sadly, we didn't make it back, but I still love and will always love the game.

Quick update

So last week, I was surprised by how easily 10 miles came and went. I was keeping a pretty fast pace in the beginning and was leading the pack but it did catch up with me and I slowed considerably by the end. I finished in about 1 hour, so that is less than a 10 minute mile. Not bad for 10 in a row.

Sunday
Ryan and I worked at the Corn 500 helping direct cars in the makeshift parking lot. It was not very much fun, but since Ryan helped me, I ended up getting double pay. That's $144 for 8 (16) hours of work. It has not yet been posted to my account, but should be showing up soon.

Mon-Fri
Did a lot of walking for work again, this time doing live traps for reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. The weather did not cooperate; we had a lot of rain again! :( Poor Iowa. I ran the first few days of the week, not too far, but I did run. Wednesday I swam at Beyer pool on campus. I only swam like 25-30 mins but I am not used to swimming and the sky was pretty ominous, so I called it quits early. Thursday I did a pilates video-- again the weather was horrific so I left work early and caught up on sleep as there was nothing to be accomplished in that storm. I took Friday off.

Saturday
I ran about 4 miles with Marissa- I skipped practice because I was really sore that morning and tired. 4 am came extra early that morning! The run went well, though I wasn't feeling great.

Sunday
Ryan and I went to the Arts Fest in DSM this afternoon, then over to the Clive Greenbelt for some exercise. I ran 12 miles and Ryan biked ~25. I have come to realize that the first 3 miles of a run are pretty tough for me, I guess I just have to get my groove. Miles 3.5-5 are pretty uneventful. I usually feel okay, but not great. Mile 6 is my runner's high. Miles 7 and 8 are decent, and I typically have a pretty decent pace. Today I felt pretty good all the way up to the last 1-1.5 miles. At the end, it took a lot of focus and determination to lift my knees high and keep moving. I was getting really sore, especially my left knee (I wonder about IT band aggravation). I was very ready to be done at the end of that run, but it makes me feel awesome that I finished almost 12 miles in under 2:20. That is almost half a marathon, and it makes my mile split under 12 minutes. I still have over 3 months until the race, so I am feeling more confident in my ability to finish my first marathon!

Now I just need to raise some money so I can actually participate.

I talked to a guy from Prairie Moon Winery at the farmer's market on Sat. morning, and I am looking into doing a fundraiser at the winery some Sunday. They even have live music! I'll keep you posted!

Whew!

Disaster recovery.

Let's just say I filled
my fair share of sandbags! I did nothing but fill and haul sandbags for over 10 hours in the course of 2 days. Clearly, I did not find the time nor the energy to run. I came back to Ames on Friday afternoon/evening.

Saturday-Tuesday

I caught insects and
other arthropods for work up by Spirit Lake. I did a lot of walking, but not much running. I did get some in, but not nearly as much as I should have. Again, long days and unknown cities... I would have run longer, too, if the guy weedeating in the cemetery hadn't been creepily following me. Maybe he was following the same path he always does and I just happened to be there that day, but I decided to keep running right through the park and onto the sidewalk, which promptly ended, pushing me onto a very busy road.
But en
ough excuses.

I am
off to a meeting, then either off to the pool or for a run. No promises about the quality of the perfomance, but I will be getting out there tonight!!!

This weekend:
-10 miles
on Saturday at Clive.
- 8 h
ours of fundraising (4 am - noon) on Sunday at the Corn 500.
I kn
ow, cheesy, and I don't particularly enjoy racing, but I'll do what I can for a buck. 8 hrs x $9 = $72 raised. Not too shabby!

Have a g
ood one!

Thank You

Thanks to Anne Brion-Iniguez for her donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Anne is my sorority sister.

Second Practice, Current Events

Saturday's run was a little harder than the previous week's practice. We ran 8 mi and I arrived a little late, was chased by a cute pug that had to be returned to her owner, almost got lost, and made some new friends along the way. I met some women I can run with during the week and collaborate with on fundraising as well. I am excited about the practice, although I was not excited about my performance. I walked a good portion of the last half of the run (or ran slowly)... In my defense, it was very hot and humid that morning. I realize that I may have a race in those conditions, but my hope is that I will improve my endurance and will become more used to the summer weather.

Sunday: Ryan and I ran around sunset. We ran around the apartment but didn't get far before he felt nauseous and I was feeling a twinge in my knee and hip. We probably only ran 2 mi, but they were hard-fought.

Mon: We checked out the Ames High track. It is pretty nice... rubberized like the MHS track back home. We ran 1 mi straight then took a water break. I ran 3 mi total that night. Ryan did windsprints while I focused on getting a rhythm. I was feeling pretty good, there was a beautiful sunset, and bunnies hopping through the fence. I realized that my shirt was soaked and that it was extremely sticky out... on the way home I started feeling really out of breath- not wheezy like you might stereotypically expect, but just deflated. My breathing was really slow. It took me a few hours and a nap to feel like myself again.

Tues: This morning I was up early for a meeting and I was rushing around getting ready when I popped a vitamin pill. I have taken these vitamins before and stopped because they made my stomach upset if I didn't eat food with them. So I ate the vitamin with food. Apparently I didn't give myself enough time to digest, because about 10 minutes later, I threw up. I felt weak all day; I ended up staying home for the afternoon because my presentation was postponed/canceled due to flooding. Project AWARE (annual river clean-up) has also been postponed so my schedule is all screwed up now...
Then just a little bit ago, I was checking my email, listening to my iPod, when I got a call telling me I have to be in Des Moines tomorrow by noon ready to mobilize for disaster response. My job is through the AmeriCorps program, which is essentially the domestic Peace Corps, so I knew this could happen, but I didn't think it actually would. I have been hearing lately that these floods are at or are nearing '93 flood levels, so I am not surprised. I just wish I had more of an idea of what we'll be doing. I guess my training for the marathon won't have to be cut short, it will just become different elements of my training- strength training by filling sandbags and removing debris. As it stands right now, I'll be sleeping in a church basement for an indefinite period of time, and may be moved elsewhere. I was planning on assisting in Parkersburg anyway; I hope we have the option of serving there.
I'll update soon.
Stay dry!!!

First Practice

I had my first official practice on Saturday at 6 am. I was a little worried about getting there due to the flooding we've had in Ames and I am not really familiar with the Des Moines area. We ran 6 miles on the Clive Greenbelt trail. I was actually really surprised how easy 6 miles was! I have run that far before, but it has been a long time since I ran on a regular basis. I got to the 1/2 way point and I thought it was the 1/2 way point for the 1/2 marathoners... so really I had run 3 miles instead of 1.5. At that point, I didn't have to convince myself to keep going even once. I did have to put in a little effort to keep up my pace. I stopped to stretch at the 1.5 mile mark because I was sore from running on my own, but that is pretty standard for me. I was also surprised by how little my asthma affected me. It is usually hard for me to run that early due to the humidity but I started the morning not feeling too great, and ended the run feeling strong. I did have a weak stomach the rest of the day, which I tried to remedy by filling it with lots of good food :)

Ryan and I ran this morning around the apartment. It was a rough morning for both of us-- I was sore and his allergies were bothering him. We ended up walking most of the 2.5 miles, but at least we got out and did it. We made eggs and homemade hashbrowns with a smoothie and some vitamins. We looked at bikes this afternoon. I feel a little more educated on the subject... but I am still not looking forward to paying for a good bike. I guess I didn't realize that I could buy a bike that is worth more than my car... or at least that the market was there for those bikes to even catch on.

In other news, I made $76 at work by "selling" a dozen muffins. I must say I am quite impressed by my co-workers' generosity. Work donors: Bruce Ehresman and Pat Schlarbaum, that I know of. There is some cash that is unaccounted for, so I think some others have been chipping in as well. It hasn't shown up on the website yet because I have to send it in still. Rachel Stork, my sorority sister donated $25 as a bribe to get me to visit her in Chicago... not that I am complaining. :) She has run a marathon before so it will be nice to get some advice from her as well as just spend some time with her. We used to be roommates and were pretty close in college.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my success so far-- I am taking cookies to work tomorrow to sell and will be printing off my letters to send to potential donors. Look for yours in the mail! I plan on running at least 5 times this week and MAYBE going for a swim. Saturday practice: Clive Greenbelt, 8 miles.
Stay tuned.

Training/Fundraising Progress

Hello all,

Life has been busy, as usual! Just thought I would let you know how I am doing.

I have been mostly working on general fitness at this point. I bought some new shoes last week (as did my friends Marissa and Ryan), which can't hurt! The shoes I had before this were probably 4 years old. The longest run I have gone on so far was with my roommate Vinnie. We probably ran about 6 miles (maybe longer). We did walk a little but I am pretty proud of us, anyway. All of the roommates (there are 4 of us) have been running more. We seem to have all caught the running bug. It is nice because I always have someone to run with, but sometimes I like to run on my own so I can go my own pace and clear my head. I won't always be able to run with my roommates, because I know they won't be too excited about running 10 and 20 miles. I especially like that I can run later at night and feel safer than I would alone. I realize that Ames is pretty safe, but after living in Central America and on campuses for the past several years, I have become a lot less trusting. I would run late at night in Marion ("home") and feel safe, but not necessarily here.

I have been running about 5 days a week. I try not to go 2 days in a row without running. Today I took the Memorial Day holiday to get some errands done. As far as TNT stuff I did today, I bought a swimming suit for cross-training in, I did sit-ups, hand weights, and jumped rope while I watched a movie... that's 2 hrs of light cardio-- not too bad-- and I bought some ingredients for goodies I am going to sell in the break room at work. I made muffins on Friday to sell this week.

I have also been working on building up my email and address list so I can contact as many people as possible. So far, I have received 1 donation from my house mother, Mom T. Mom T lives in my sorority house and makes sure that everything is running smoothly. I don't live there anymore, but I had a great time with her when I did. Thanks, Mom T!

Anyway, things are looking up. I am running farther and coming up with fundraising schemes all the time. I am hoping to hook up with the 3 other girls doing TNT out of Ames; not just to run with, but also for fundraising purposes.

I've got to go now, I need to eat something before I go for my evening run.
Happy Memorial Day!

Eulogy

Mom

Born near Galena of limestone and mines,
West 'cross the river, you left Illinois.
Raised near Lamont, a Hawkeye defined,
Fell deeply in love with a Masonville boy.
Four kids, a store, your faith, and your love,
Your family, your friends, your life, your embrace,
The life that you lived, gently guided above,
Toward kindness and peace,
With hope and with grace.
Near 80 years on, it's time for your rest,
A time for reflection, a time to regard,
To have known you, a gift, heavenly blessed,
To love you, so easy, to lose you, so hard.
Though we need to weep and grieve for you, Mom,
We celebrate you and your life and your joy.
Cause we know today that you're smiling somewhere,
Hand-in-hand with your God
And the Masonville boy.

Turning a New Leaf

I have just joined a wonderful organization. Basically, I raise money for a good cause (the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), and they send me on a sweet trip.
The catch? I have to compete in a distance event.
I have chosen to run in the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco on October 19th. I really wanted to try the Century Ride (100 miles) or a triathlon, but both require a bike, and I can't afford a nice one right now... so that will be something to look forward to for my next event.
I know it may be hard to believe that I am actually going to do this-- raise $4,300 and run 26.2 miles in SF, potentially the hilliest city in the nation-- but that is exactly what I intend to do.
I will be running not only to honor my late grandmother, Mary Cannon, who we lost to lymphoma in May of 2002, but also to strive for advancements in this field. Who knows, some day the money I raise may be used to help save my life or the life of someone I love.
Please join me.

...and remember, I am always looking for a running buddy!
